On a trip to Lakewood Stud in SA, Trainer Denis Daffy spied a colt in a paddock whilst looking at other yearlings to purchased for clients. He was so taken by this colt that he kept going for a closer look.
The clients of Denis’s saw his interest in this yearling and backed his judgment to purchase him. One of the owner’s children was a wrestling fan so the name of Big Poppa Pump came about.
After winning 3 races on the trot, 2 at Warrnambool and one a Moonee Valley the connections were convinced to enter him in the Group 1 VRC Sire Produce Stakes at Flemington. The barrier draw of no 14 could have not been any worse for the horse and with that draw a horse never really does well but he fought the race well and was only beaten on the line by ‘Barley a Moment’ ($16,500 stud fee). A terrific result for the horse and his owners.
In just 6 race starts Big Poppa Pump earned his connections just over $108,000 but had to be retired due to a sustained leg injury.
His career statistics were 41 starts for 7 – 4-7 – Total earnings of $185,725 |
